Who is Reinier Tijssen?

I am Reinier Tijssen, living in Zwolle with my wife and three daughters. As an optimistic and enthusiastic product designer, I am passionate about creating high-quality products and everything related to the outdoors. My mind is always active, constantly generating new ideas or improving existing ones.

In my daily life, I work as a creative catalyst for companies, using my creativity and enthusiasm to drive product innovations. With a background in product design, I started my own venture, Haringboer®, in 2013, and since early 2024, I have transitioned to full-time entrepreneurship—a long-held dream come true.

Since 2013, I have been developing and selling lightweight tent pegs. Driven by my passion for affordable top-quality products, I took on the challenge of creating my own brand of tent pegs: Haringboer® was born.

Ten years later, these pegs are well-known among camping enthusiasts and are sold through various channels including Bever (Netherlands), AS Adventure (Belgium & France), Amazon (Germany), and Bol.com (Netherlands and Belgium), in addition to my website.

I design the tent pegs in the Netherlands, often collaborating with student teams, and strive to achieve the perfect balance between strength and weight. I optimize existing production processes of the world’s largest tent peg manufacturer to fit my technical insights. This approach is more sustainable than traditional product development: it avoids the need for new molds and focuses on smart optimization to deliver a high-quality product at an affordable price.

By not skimping on material quality and using computer simulations, I ensure that the tent pegs are both light and strong. Sustainability is a key consideration throughout development, production, and distribution.
